Grip Strength Exercises

The best hand grip exercise includes your basic gripping movement. Once you know how to hold your grip device, follow the sample workout we’ve included to get the most out of these basic movements.

Basic Grip Strength Exercise: Open & Close

Step 1: Grab your device so that your fingers are on one of the handles—or the sides of the ring—and your thumb on the other.

Step 2: Squeeze hard!

Step 3: Release and repeat.

Step 4: Switch hands and do the same number of repetitions.

Best Finger Grip Strength Exercise: Squash the Roll

Our favorite exercises involve the use of putty. It’s very versatile, and while you work therapy putty, your hands and wrists are part of the rehabilitation process—so it’s not all about the fingers. Though, your fingers certainly get a workout!

Step 1: Roll the putty into a long, thick cylindrical shape.

Step 2: Pinch the putty with your thumb and forefinger to flatten it.

Step 3: Repeat until the entire cylinder is a long, flat pancake.

Step 4: Recreate the cylindrical roll, and repeat the process with the other hand.

A Great Workout for Hand Grip Strength

Warm Up

  • Perform open & close with an easy resistance level—10 reps with each hand.
  • Invert the gripper and repeat—10 more reps.
  • Use a gripper that is difficult—but that you can close all the way a few times—and slowly close and release for 7 repetitions with each hand.

Main Set

  • Using the gripper with your goal resistance, try closing it with each hand as far as you can. Perform 8 repetitions, with 30 seconds to 1 minute rest between reps.
  • Perform 6 negatives on each hand—start with the grip strengthener closed, and resist the pressure as it pushes your hand apart. Rest 30 seconds to 1 minute between reps.

Cool Down

  • Stretch the wrist and fingers.
