Choosing the Best Shower Chair

by Jessica Hegg June 24, 2019 0 Comments

Shower Transfer BenchMaintaining safety and independence while bathing means investing in a chair that provides you with stability and comfort. Finding the shower chair with the right weight capacity, construction, and traction can be hard, so let us help you with our comprehensive guide. We will cover all the relevant factors, and specialized recommendations.

What to Consider when Choosing a Shower Chair

Below, we broke down the most important factors when comparing shower chairs. Learn what our selection has to offer here.

Weight Capacity

Our shower stool is designed to support 250 lbs, while our shower chair and transfer bench can hold up to 300 lbs each. Always be sure to choose a shower chair that can support your weight to ensure stability.

Backrest

The backrest of our standard shower chair and transfer bench feature a contoured design for added comfort. It is a great asset for those with limited balance and back strength. Wide handles make them easy to carry and re-position while the textured plastic material is lightweight and durable.

Seat Design

All of our shower chairs use a textured plastic material which prevents slipping even when wet. Our standard shower chair and transfer bench go a step further with drainage holes that allow water to flow through to prevent pooling. This protects the integrity of the textured plastic and preserves traction. Finally, the extra wide seat on our transfer bench makes it easy to scoot into the shower without having to step over the wall of the tub.

Legs

All three of our shower chairs feature durable and rust-resistant aluminum legs that still stay supportive over time. Their height can be adjusted easily with locking brass pins. Find out more about adjusting your shower chair in our FAQ section.

Feet

Our shower chairs’ feet is made of skid-resistant rubber which will keep them from slipping even in the wettest conditions. Our transfer bench goes a step further, to include suction cups on two of the legs. These go inside the tub for maximum stability.

Handrails

The standard shower chair includes two foam padded handrails. These help with gripping for easy transfers into and out of the chair. The rails are angled outward to allow more sitting space and enhanced comfort.

Our transfer bench has a single handrail which is meant to be placed inside the tub. This allows for stability during the shower while leaving enough room to slide in and out of the tub easily.

Assembly

All of our shower chairs are easy to assemble, with a tool-free design that anyone can use. This makes setup easy and is especially useful with our transfer bench, allowing you to reverse the backrest and arm rail depending on your bathroom layout.

Our Recommendations for...

Other important factors to consider are the users level of independence, mobility, and balance. Below you'll find our recommendations based on these factors and the most common reasons our customers purchase a shower chair. You'll see that each design offers specific advantages made to serve your needs.

Shower Chair for Patients

Limited Mobility

For patients who have trouble standing or getting into the shower, it is important to prioritize stability and traction. Our transfer bench helps patients into and out of the tub with an elongated surface made of slip-resistant textured plastic. Foam padded handrails are easy to grip, and when paired with two suction feet on the inside of the tub, it amounts to the most stable shower chair we offer.

Good Balance

The most mobile patients may only need a bit of extra support when bathing, or a way to help manage fatigue when showering. For those with good balance, our shower stool gives the right amount of stability in a compact design. It’s rubber capped feet resist slipping and it can be adjusted to the perfect height with simple but effective brass pins. It’s a good choice for travel, short term use, or those looking for comfortable seating while showering or washing legs.

When recovering from surgery, it’s important to avoid excess strain and manage pain during all your daily activities. That’s why our tub transfer bench plays such an important role in the recovery process. It lets surgery patients slide into and out of the tub with minimal strain, providing a durable seat with a slip-resistant surface. As an alternative, our standard shower chair can offer similar levels of support with twin handrails and a compact design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Does Medicare cover bathroom equipment?

A: Medicare Part B covers items that qualify as durable medical equipment. However, because shower chairs have not been classified as medically necessary, most buyers need to pay out of pocket. Check with your provider for specific details on your plan.

Q: How do you disinfect a shower chair?

A: Wipe-down your shower chair with soap and water after each use, and be sure to reach small cracks and crevices. Luckily, our chairs are resistant to mold and mildew, making them easier to clean.

Q: How high should my shower chair be?

A: The proper height for a shower chair balances comfort and safety. Ideally, your feet should be flat on the floor, and knees level with your waist. For a transfer bench, be sure you can easily clear the tub wall while scooting into the shower.
