What is the purpose of an alternating pressure mattress?
This mattress is placed on top of a regular bed mattress. It has air-filled channels that alternate filling up and decompressing to keep bearing weight off certain areas, and allows blood flow to reach different areas of the body of immobilized or weak patients who cannot shift their weight frequently.

How do I know if my patient needs an alternating pressure mattress?
An alternating pressure mattress should be used for patients who are likely to spend more than 15 hours per day in bed or who are classified as medium to high risk of developing pressure ulcers, or bedsores. (People at higher risk are typically: seriously ill; not mobile; have spinal cord injury; do not eat a proper diet; wear prosthesis; smoke; are incontinent of stool or urine; have diabetes; have COPD or heart failure; have Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, or heart failure; have broken hip or hip surgery)
How do I adjust the firmness or softness of my alternating pressure mattress?
The dial knob on the pressure pump can be turned and adjusted to meet pressure preference. Turn towards the “+” sign for higher pressure, and the “-” for lower pressure.
How frequently does the air pressure rotate?
The air pressure is rotated throughout the mattress about every 6 minutes. There are 2 main air chambers that alternate.
How much does everything weigh?
The entire shipped box weighs just under 9 pounds. The mattress itself, before it is inflated, weighs 2 pounds.
Is the mattress waterproof? Will it work for someone with severe incontinence?
Yes, the mattress is completely waterproof. It will work great for individuals with incontinence, you can consider combining the mattress with an incontinence bed pad to make cleanup easier.

Will it work on top of a regular bed, not a hospital bed?
Yes, what is great about having the alternating pressure pad overlay is that it very flexible and will work over a standard mattress or hospital bed of any size.
Does the mattress have a plastic smell?
Every new item has a very minor new smell right out of the box. This does go away very quickly.
What are the weight restrictions?

Can the pump hang on the bed? it be placed on the floor?
Yes, the pump has built in hooks to hang on the side of the bed and rubber grips to prevent sliding on the floor or bedside table
How loud is the pump?
The pump is surprisingly silent. More quiet than a water pump on a small fishtank.
How long can you keep the pump plugged in?
You can keep the pump plugged in 24/7.
What size bed will it fit?
The pad can lay on top of any size mattress. It will only cover 36 inches of the bed which is equivalent to a twin size mattress.
Does it have flaps to fold over the ends of the bed?
Yes, the pad has flaps on both ends to help keep the mattress in place on your bed.
What material is the pad made of?
It is made of a durable plastic vinyl material.
I have a cat, can it be punctured easily?
It can be punctured, but not very easily. If you have a cat it is best to put a durable sheet over the pad and you will be fine. If it does get punctured a repair kit is included.
How thick the the mattress when it is filled?
The mattress is 2.5 inches when fully inflated.
Can it be used on a recliner?
The pad is not built for a recliner, but it can work. If the chair is in a reclined position it can go vertically aligned with your body. In a seated position it can go horizontally and run over the edges of the chair.
Can the pressure mattress be covered with a fitted sheet?
Yes, a fitted sheet can be placed over the pressure mattress.
Does the alternating pressure mattress help to avoid/reduce bedsores?
Yes, the alternating pressure mattress is used in prevention and healing of bedsores. The mattress will relieve pressure from vulnerable areas so that sores do not develop. We do still recommend traditional further inspection of turning the patient and observing high risk areas regularly, and to not solely rely on the mattress.
How do I clean my alternating pressure mattress?
To clean your mattress make sure to disconnect from the electrical outlet. Use a damp towel with mild soap and water to wipe down, and then dry with a soft towel. You can also wipe down with alcohol wipes or light rubbing alcohol.
