Diagnosing Carpal Tunnel

Carpal tunnel is the result of pressure on the median nerve, which runs from your forearm through your wrist to your hand. When the median nerve experiences pressure, you feel pain. Since this nerve produces movement in your pointer, middle, and ring fingers, pressure on the median nerve results in the following symptoms:

  • Pain
  • Tingling
  • Numbness
  • Weakness
  • Problems with all fingers except the pinky finger
  • Pain goes away when you shake your hands
  • Nighttime symptoms

If you have carpal tunnel syndrome or any of these symptoms, a wrist brace will reduce and alleviate pain, inflammation, and swelling. And it will support and stabilize the wrist.

Those dealing with carpal tunnel are often at risk for tendonitis, as well.   Click here to find the best wrist braces for tendonitis!

Maximize the Benefits of a Carpal Tunnel Brace

Because carpal tunnel syndrome is frequently the result of repetitive motion, here are some additional steps you can take to maximize the benefits of wearing a brace.

Stretch the Hands & Wrists

Improving the flexibility of your wrists will reduce carpal tunnel pain. Here are two easy stretches you can do anywhere.

Steps:

  1. Hold your palm in front of you as if you were telling someone to stop.
  2. With your other hand, grasp the fingers of your outstretched hand. Gently pull back. You will feel a stretch in the forearm and wrist area.
  3. Hold for 10-15 seconds, and return to the starting position.
  4. From the starting position, point the fingers of your outstretched hand down.
  5. Use your other hand to gently pull the fingers of the outstretched hand back toward your forearm. You will feel a stretch in the wrist area.
  6. Hold for 10-15 seconds, and return to the starting position.
  7. Repeat these two stretches in sequence until you feel better. Just avoid overdoing it.

RICE The Wrist

  • Rest frequently.
  • Ice the wrists to reduce swelling.
  • Compress to alleviate pain. (A brace is perfect for this.)
  • Elevate the wrist by placing it on a pillow while you ice.
