Diagnosing a Sprained Wrist

With so many different wrist injuries, it can be difficult to know which one you have. Of course, there’s absolutely no substitute for a doctor’s diagnosis. But while you wait for your appointment, here are a few ways to tell if you have sprained wrist:

Sensations

If you have a sprained wrist, you may feel:

  • Pain that gets worse when flexing the muscles in your arm and hand
  • Sharp pain when using the wrist
  • Tenderness
  • A popping sensation at the time of injury

Appearance

A wrist sprain may look:

  • Swollen
  • Bruised

There should be no physical deformity with a sprained wrist. Physical changes to the arm may indicate injuries such as breaks or progressive conditions like arthritis.

Other Ways to Treat Wrist Sprains

Once your doctor has diagnosed your sprained wrist, it’s time to begin treatment. Your doctor will likely have wrapped your wrist or—if it’s a severe sprain—placed it in a cast. But there other ways to treat wrist sprains, including:

RICE Protocol

Within the first 72 hours of injury, the RICE protocol is one of the most effective ways of quelling pain and inflammation.

  • When possible, do not use your affected wrist. This allows the injury time to heal.
  • Reduce inflammation by placing an ice pack on the wrist for up to fifteen minutes at a time, as often as required. Check out the best ice packs for injuries here.
  • If your doctor has already wrapped your wrist, then it’s receiving all the compression it needs. If not, consider using a compression sleeve for wrists to alleviate pain and swelling.
  • Raise your wrist above heart level to stop swelling. You can achieve this by lying down and propping the affected arm on cushions or pillows.

Hot and Cold Therapy

After the initial 72 hours have passed, you may experience more benefits from alternating hot and cold therapy than from using ice alone. Applying one minute of ice and then three minutes of heat. Repeat this pattern three times. This regimen can be done once or twice a day.

For more information, check out this useful guide to alternating hot and cold therapy.

Exercises

When your doctor confirms it is safe to do so, start stretching and strengthening your wrist. You may wish to work with a physical therapist, or you can go it alone.

Some of the best exercises for wrist sprains include:

  • Wrist Flexions: Slowly bend your wrist forward and hold for five seconds.
  • Wrist Extensions: Gently stretch your wrist backward and hold for five seconds.
  • Handshake: Gently move your hand from side to side, as if shaking hands.
